The discovery was made around midday today after the alarm had been raised when the man could not be found.

The man, a 56-year-old Spanish national, had been out on a fishing vessel yesterday but had returned to land in the Killybegs area last night.

The Gardaí contacted the coat guard at around 11.30am and the remains were discovered by the Killybegs coast guard unit near the town’s harbour shortly after 12 midday.

His remains were taken to Letterkenny Hospital where a post-mortem will be carried out.

Gardaí are investigating if the man drowned after falling into the water and are not treating the death as suspicious.
