THE body of a man was recovered from the water off the east coast yesterday after a small boat he was travelling in capsized.

Stephen Fergus (48) was found about a mile from shore, close to Dundalk lighthouse, shortly after 6pm.

He had taken a small punt out from Soldiers Point to reach another boat at about 3.45pm but went missing after he capsized.

There was nobody else on board and weather conditions were said to be calm.

It is understood Mr Fergus was going out to his boat moored off shore to travel to another vessel which was having engine trouble.

An extensive search was launched involving various Coast Guard units, Clogher Head RNLI and Dundalk Sub Aqua Club.

Grieving family members gathered at Dundalk harbour last night after Mr Fergus's body was recovered.
