Body found in burnt-out car close to Lordship Credit Union

A body has been found in a car, which erupted into flames while parked at a quayside outside Dundalk.

The area around Gyles Quay was sealed off last night as gardai launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident took place not far from the Lordship credit union premises where Det Garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead on January 25.

A senior officer said it was too early to determine the circumstances that led to the fire inside the car.

But he confirmed that gardai were treating the incident as a suspicious death.

It was not clear whether the victim was a man or woman.

Locals had noticed the parked car shortly before 7.30pm.

But as some of them approached the vehicle it burst into flames.

The local fire brigade were called to the scene but the car was completely burnt out.

Gardai have called in the State Pathologist and also summoned officers from the technical bureau at the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

Officers said they had not been able to determine the registration plate on the car because of the fire damage.
