Bodies of two women discovered in Co Clare

The owner of an English-registered car is being traced after the bodies of two women were found on a beach.

The grim discovery was made at White Strand, a scenic tourist spot close to Miltown Malbay, Co Clare, at 10.30am.

Investigators said the women were fully clothed and they do not suspect foul play.

Gardai are still trying to identify the women, who are thought to be middle-aged and possibly from England or Wales.

The English-registered car with a dog inside was found near the small sandy beach, which is favoured by swimmers and surfers.

Investigators believe the car was connected to the women, who could have been holidaying in the area, and have asked UK authorities to trace the registered owner of the vehicle.

The scene has been sealed off to allow forensic investigators to carry out an examination.

The women's bodies have been removed from the scene and taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick for a post-mortem.
