THE bodies of two men found dead in a burnt out car have been identified, gardai said.

Minor criminals Joseph Redmond and Anthony Burnett, from Dublin's north inner city, were shot dead before their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

Detectives are still working to establish a motive for the double murder of Redmond, 25, of Ballybough House, Ballybough, and Anthony Burnett, 31, of Croke Villas, Ballybough.

Their bodies were discovered in a stolen black Volkswagen Golf at the edge of woods in Ravensdale, Co Louth, by firefighters tackling the car blaze on Wednesday night.

DNA had to be used to formally identify the men, who both had criminal convictions but are not regarded as big players in organised crime.

It is believed they were the victims of a row between two crime gangs.

Two cars found abandoned in south Armagh are also being forensically examined to establish if they are linked to the double murder, which happened near the border.

Mr Redmond, who had 55 previous convictions, appeared in court in Co Wexford last October on a charge of stealing beer kegs.

Mr Burnett, who had more than 30 convictions, was given a six-year sentence in April 2009 for assault causing harm and two robberies while on bail for earlier offences. The last two years of his sentence were suspended.

Their killings were the second gangland-style double murder within 48 hours after underworld enforcer Andy Barry, 31, originally from Dublin, and an eastern European man were gunned down in a house in Kilcock, Co Kildare late last Tuesday.
