MORE than 1,000 people attended the Business and Finance Awards 2013, recognising excellence in the world of Irish business.

And the Smurfit Kappa Group packaging firm was named as the company of the year in Dublin's Convention Centre last night.

The company boasts 41,000 employees across 32 countries and continued to perform strongly throughout 2013.

In July, shares in the group rose to the highest price in six years, as the company's second-quarter results beat analyst expectations and drove shares up.

Champion boxer Katie Taylor and rugby legend Brian O'Driscoll were among those who lined out for the occasion last night, which saw the country's best business minds honoured.

John Moloney from Glanbia scooped the business person of the year award.

Meanwhile, IT security consultants Integrity Solutions took the prize for enterprise of the year.

Former US senator George Mitchell was recognised on the night for his tireless work as the chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland in the 1990s.
