A FIRE at a derelict building in the city centre caused disruption to services at the country's busiest train station.

Fire-fighters tackled the blaze at the building on Preston Street, not far from Connolly Station.

Two platforms were closed as smoke drifted across the station, causing delays to DART services of around 20 minutes during evening rush hour.

The alarm was raised at around 5.15pm when smoke was seen streaming from the three-storey terraced house on Preston Street, which is off Amiens Street, in Dublin 1.

A plume of thick black smoke could be seen coming from the top floor as the fire quickly spread through the abandoned building.

Fire fighters at the scene said they were concerned someone may still be inside, but later ruled this out following a search.
