THE Mid-West Hospital in Limerick has imposed a blanket ban on visitors after six cases of the winter vomiting bug were confirmed.

The hospital's infection control team are appealing to the public to co-operate with the restrictions to prevent a further spread of the norovirus .

Visits are banned to all wards, with the exception of visits to critically ill patients by arrangement.

Only parents or guardians will be admitted to see child patients.

The hospital said that only genuine emergencies should present themselves at A&E.

The virus is highly infectious and can still spread for up to 48 hours after a person feels well. Those affected are advised to sip plenty of water.
