Blacksmiths forge ahead with giant sculpture plan
BLACKSMITHS from all over the world will forge together to hammer out a giant sculpture at a special event to be held this summer, writes Anita Guidera.
Ireland is experiencing "a renaissance" in blacksmithing, which was known as the 'king of crafts', with a new generation of talented artists emerging.
Details of the "forge in", which will take place in Monaghan in June, were revealed at an exhibition of the contemporary forge work by 30 blacksmiths in Manorhamilton, Leitrim, last night.
"It will be the biggest gathering of blacksmiths ever seen in Ireland and will include probably the six top master blacksmiths in the world," said Eric O'Neill of the Irish Artist Blacksmith's Association (IABA).
"In the past blacksmiths were associated with agricultural and functional work, but that has all changed now. We have 40 members in the IABA who are making bespoke pieces of furniture and art and we are just starting to tap into the market," said Mr O'Neill.
