The teenagers were taking part in the 'Cycle to Calcutta 8,300km' challenge, part of the school's famous St Patrick's Day fundraising tradition.

Former Dublin football star Brogan, who retired from the inter-county scene recently, was impressed with the pupils' charitable spirit.

"They're doing a great job and everyone looks to be having fun," he said.

Ms Mitchell O'Connor added: "We come from a very privileged society in comparison to what's going on in Calcutta. We want our young people to be socially aware."

The Transition Year students will also be selling Goal badges for €2 around Grafton Street on March 15 and 16. They will also be on sale in shops around the country. To get involved, email goal-aidlink@blackrockcollege.com
