Black Santas still spreading festive cheer

LONG after the man in the red suit has hung up his sack, the work of the Black Santas continues.

Over €30,000 raised during the 2012 Black Santa Sit-Out at St Ann's Church, Dawson Street, has been handed out to 16 charities.

The collectors, all ministers from the diocese, earned their name because of the long black cloaks they wear to keep out the cold, which they weather every day for nine days from 10am until 6pm. They are joined by choirs each lunch time.

The appeal is modelled on a similar one in Belfast.

The money collected was donated to St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army, the Simon Community, Protestant Aid, Trust, Barnardos and Church of Ireland Overseas Aid.
