Bishop John McAreavey is to take an eight-month break from his role as head of the diocese of Dromore.
The bishop, whose nephew John was on honeymoon with his new wife Michaela in Mauritius when she was murdered, will study in Israel.
Bishop McAreavey said he has found his role both fulfilling and challenging.
"In recent times, along with my family, I have experienced great sadness and tragedy," he said.
"Having consulted with colleagues and friends, I have now decided to undertake this period of personal renewal."
The sabbatical runs from next February until September.
Bishop McAreavey, 63, has been head of the Dromore diocese since 1999.
Monsignor Aidan Hamill, vicar general of the diocese, will administer during the absence.
