Bidders dig deep to crush FitzPatrick car
IT would only be worth a couple of hundred euro as a second-hand car, but bidders are offering to fork out more than €5,200 for the privilege of scrapping Sean FitzPatrick's motor.
An online auction to push the button to crush the former Anglo banker's repossessed banger will come to a close today.
Bids swiftly mounted up on eBay for the chance to scrap the 19-year-old 3-Series BMW, as people lined up to be given the chance to take out their angst on the aged motor.
There are 40 bids already recorded and all proceeds of the auction, organised through the RTE Radio One's 'Mooney Show', will go to the Samaritans. "I'm amazed that so many people bid online for the right to press the button to crush this car," said presenter Derek Mooney.
"It is heartening that in these difficult economic times so many people are prepared to give so willingly to charity."
The auction came about after National Recycling Ltd made a successful sealed bid of €1,243.56 to obtain the car from FitzPatrick's court-appointed assignee.
