Betting splurge shakes up race to be FF leader
PUNTERS plunged on Brian Lenihan to become the next Fianna Fail leader, hours before he delivered one of the toughest Budgets in the nation's history.
Mr Lenihan had started the week in third place in the betting to succeed Brian Cowen as party leader. On Monday, bookies were offering odds of just 7-2 -- but a smattering of "monkeys" (€500 bets) brought his odds tumbling to 5-2 and a further wager of €3,000 led bookies Paddy Power to tighten them further at 9-4.
Paddy Power has now installed the Finance Minister as second favourite, behind Foreign Minister Micheal Martin, who remains the favourite at 8-11 .
Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin is in third place at 11-4.
