Immediate goodwill payments have been urged for the families of the 13 US balcony collapse victims as California officials predicted imminent lawsuits of up to €100m-plus, writes Ralph Riegel.

Legal rights campaigner Erin Brockovich has offered to represent the grieving families as she teamed up with a Dublin firm of solicitors, Phelim O'Neill & Co.

Ms Brockovich, whose campaigns inspired a Hollywood movie, offered her services to help the families secure non-litigious settlements. Two major San Francisco law firms have also been in contact with the families of the dead and injured.

Ms Brockovich called for goodwill payments for the Irish families. She said: "It's essential families do not face a nightmare of mounting medical bills."
