Berkeley survivor wakes from coma
One of the survivors of the Berkeley balcony tragedy has been taken off the critical list as she started to wake from an induced coma.
Aoife Beary remains in care in ICU in the Stanford Medical Centre in Palo Alto, near San Francisco.
She has started some communication with her parents and medical team, a statement on the 'Friends of Aoife Beary' Facebook page said.
It said while Aoife has slowly started to awaken from the induced coma, the process is expected to take some time.
"She has had a tracheotomy within the last week and continues to make progress on her long road to recovery," it said.
Six students were killed on June 16 as they celebrated Aoife's 21st birthday when a balcony collapsed. Seven others were injured in the incident.
Aoife, a former student of Dublin's Loreto College Foxrock, is among five of the seven students still recovering in the US.
Earlier this week, the Beary family were said to be overwhelmed by the support and best wishes they had received for Aoife and themselves since the balcony collapse. It is expected that her parents, Mike and Angela, will remain at her bedside for the foreseeable future.
