A Nigerian man was clinging to life last night after being battered across the head with a baseball bat in broad daylight.
Shoppers and passers-by looked on in horror as Taiwo Jamani (45) was savagely attacked during a fracas in Swords, north Dublin yesterday. The victim was left unconscious in the street. It is understood he was fighting for his life in Beaumont Hospital, while a 37-year-old man, also from Nigeria, was in custody in Coolock garda station.
A WOMAN has died while swimming off Achill Island in Co Mayo. The middle-aged woman, named locally as Mary Quinn, was swimming with a group of people in the sea near the village of Keel when she got into difficulty.
The alarm was raised after 3pm and emergency services including the coastguard were sent to the scene. Ms Quinn was pulled from the sea, but efforts to resuscitate her proved unsuccessful. Her remains were transferred to Mayo General Hospital.
MAJELLA ENJOYS HOLIDAY
DANIEL O'Donnell has revealed how he and brave wife Majella met her cancer battle head-on by pressing ahead with holiday plans 10 days after her first treatment. The singer also revealed that Majella has now raised more than €575,000 after appearing on the 'Late Late Show'.
"The doctors told us to live life as normally as possible and do all the things she felt up to. Prior to her diagnosis we had booked a trip to Rome, Vienna and Budapest. Thankfully she was well enough to go and we had a great time," he said.
FARMER KILLED IN CRASH
AN ELDERLY farmer died after his car collided with an articulated lorry at a busy crossroads in Co Roscommon.
The incident occurred at 10am yesterday along the N5 at Lissaphuca near Tulsk. The man, named locally as Michael Farrell (74), from nearby Strokestown, was taken by air ambulance to University College Hospital Galway where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the lorry was uninjured.
MARTY'S MOTHER DIES
The mother of RTE presenter Marty Whelan has died aged 95.
Marty, his wife Maria and children Jessica (22) and Tom (20) were at his mother Lily's bedside when she passed away. "My lovely mum Lily just passed away," he said. "We are heartbroken but happy that she is at peace and with my dad, Sean." Marty's father died in August 1998. Daithi O Se will fill in for Whelan on tomorrow's 'Winning Streak'.
