Barristers want cuts postponed

BARRISTERS have written to Justice Minister Alan Shatter asking him to defer a decision on extra pay cuts to criminal legal aid.
The changes will see defence lawyers paid less than prosecution lawyers acting for the State in criminal trials.
The Bar Council says the 'parity-in-payment rule' ensures equal representation for suspects facing trial. It has asked Mr Shatter to postpone his decision to allow for the council to propose alternative costs savings.
