A man was stabbed to death while babysitting his grandchildren in north Dublin

A murder investigation is expected to be launched after a man was stabbed to death while babysitting his grandchildren.

The victim, named locally as 55-year-old Michael Gannon, was knifed on the doorstep of a house in Mourne Park, Skerries, north Dublin, at around 6pm yesterday.

A 29-year-old neighbour was arrested at a nearby house and taken for questioning.

A knife has been recovered.

The victim, from Finglas, was attacked as he visited his daughter's home to care for her two young children, who were in the house at the time.

Gardai tried to gain access to a nearby property to speak to a man in connection with the incident, but had to negotiate for a period of time before being allowed in.

The suspect, who is originally from Romania, can be held for up to 24 hours at Balbriggan Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Detectives are trying to establish a motive for the attack.
