A BABY boy was fighting for his life in hospital last night after plunging to the pavement from a second-floor apartment.

The toddler had gone over to a window in an apartment in Galway City and crawled out, falling to the pavement below.

His distraught mother immediately raised the alarm.

Last night, the 18-month-old boy remained in a critical condition in hospital.

The window fall happened at Lydon Court, Rosemary Avenue, just off Eyre St, on Saturday morning. After the mother, who is from Latvia, raised the alarm an ambulance and gardai were on the scene within minutes.

The area was cordoned off for a time on Saturday while gardai investigated the scene.

The injured child was rushed to University Hospital Galway before being transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin for specialist medical attention.

The baby has since been undergoing treatment in the Dublin city centre hospital.

A spokesperson at the hospital confirmed that he remained on the critical list last night.
