Gardai said the infant, who is believed to be about six months old, was travelling in the car with three adults and three other children.

The accident happened on the R392 at Ballymahon, about a mile from Lanesborough. No other vehicle was involved.

All seven were rushed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, where the boy's condition is said to be serious.

The others are not believed to have suffered life-threatening injures.

The road was closed as accident investigators examined the scene.
