A UK adult entertainment television channel has agreed to change the phone numbers for its x-rated chatline after complaints from residents in Westport, County Mayo.

Westport locals have been inundated with calls from users of adult chatlines due to a similarity in the phone numbers advertised by British channel ‘Babestation’.

The Sunday Independent last weekend revealed Regional Development Minister Michael Ring complained to broadcast regulators and gardai on behalf of constituents who were receiving the calls to he x-rated phone service.

The story, which led to international headlines, has now resulted in the channel agreeing to change its phone numbers.

In a statement, the television station said: “In July 2015, new number ranges came into effect in the UK.

"Unbeknownst to Babestation, some of the ranges allocated were similar to Irish domestic number ranges.

“In August 2015, Babestation were contacted by the Irish Broadcast Authority (BAI) and notified that a resident in Westport had been receiving misdialled calls late at night which he thought might be meant for Babestation. Changes were made and that appeared to have solved the issue.

“However, recent issues have highlighted that the issue persisted elsewhere and so, from this evening, Babestation will be changing the numbers to the range 0908 406 XXXX which will negate the issue in its entirety,” it added.
