Aviva staff to ballot on action
AVIVA workers are to vote on industrial action next week after one trade union, UNITE, accused the insurance giant of being "sadistic" towards its 2,000-strong Irish workforce.
The company -- which plans to halve its Irish presence with 950 job cuts from next March -- has so far failed to inform staff precisely where the jobs will be axed or what severance terms will be available to them.
More than 200 Aviva workers in Cork yesterday joined their colleagues in Dublin and Galway in endorsing a national ballot for industrial action.
UNITE said that once a fourth and final briefing meeting has taken place in Portlaoise on Monday, the national ballot will immediately be organised.
