Authority stands by adoptions
THE lawyer at the centre of the investigation into an alleged international child smuggling ring claims he helped more than 60 Irish couples adopt from Mexico in the past seven years, writes Eilish O'Regan.
However, the Adoption Authority of Ireland confirmed to the Irish Independent last night it would not be conducting any "lookback" investigation into children who had already been registered for adoption here even though the lawyer, Carlos Lopez, may have been involved.
"Any adoptions from Mexico which are registered are safe and secure. However, if any specific information is brought to our attention about a case we will re-examine it," said a spokeswoman.
She was speaking as 12 Irish couples who travelled to Mexico to adopt children continued to be questioned by Mexican authorities.
