Fine Gael TD Derek Keating was also in mourning following the sudden death of his mother. And Independent TD Mick Wallace lost his aunt in a car crash on Sunday.

The Attorney General's mother, Katie Whelan, died at the weekend in Galway.

Rebecca Keating (82) died on New Year's Day, just a few hours after her admission to St James's Hospital the evening before, after she became unwell at home.

Mr Wallace's 69-year-old aunt, Margaret Wallace, from Wexford town died when her car hit a ditch outside New Ross.

She was the second wife of the Independent TD's uncle, James Wallace.
