Gardai have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the attempted abduction of a girl in Ferbane, Co Offaly earlier this month.

The man was arrested in the Tramore area of Co Waterford this morning and is being detained at Tullamore Garda Station.

A 13-year-old girl was assaulted by a man who tried to pull her in to a white van on the road to Clonlyon in Moyclare, Ferbane, Co Offaly on July 19.

She was cycling to a friend's house at around 8.30pm when the attempted abduction happened.

"I would say to locals -- be careful, there is a predator in the area," the mother of the girl said.

It is understood that the van, which was described as a "car-type", had a registration that began with 05-D.

Following the incident, the man, described by gardai as middle-aged and small in stature with dark hair and wearing glasses, drove in the direction of Ferbane.

Gardai said they were taking the allegation "very seriously".
