President Michael D. Higgins has led tributes to Ireland's paralympians, who scooped three gold medals and "inspired the nation" in a gold rush in Rio last night.
"I want to congratulate our medal winners on a fantastic day for Ireland, with Eoghan Clifford, Colin Lynch, Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal winning medals at the Rio Paralympics," he said.
"On behalf of the people of Ireland I want to convey my congratulations to Colin Lynch on winning his silver medal in the C2 time trial, to his roommate Eoghan Clifford on winning a second medal in Rio, a richly deserved gold, and to Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal on their gold in the B tandem time trial."
"These athletes have shown what can be accomplished, and their phenomenal performances have inspired the nation." Ireland's medal haul now stands at seven after swimmer Ellen Keane took a bronze and Colin Lynch a silver in the C2 time trial yesterday.
