Astronaut Hadfield ends space career

CANADIAN astronaut Chris Hadfield has retired from the space programme.

Commander Hadfield amassed a large Irish following during his recent stint on the International Space Station, frequently using Twitter to post spectacular images of Ireland.

Mr Hadfield, whose daughter Kristin studies in Trinity College, also made Gaelgoir history by sending a message back to Earth in Irish.

He said he would be returning to live in Canada after his 35 years as a fighter pilot and astronaut, describing his command of the ISS as "a kind of pinnacle of my entire career".
