Josiane Umumarashavu has never been to Ireland but her face has been welcomed in more than one-million households nationwide.

She adorned Trocaire’s famous Lent campaign boxes in 2004 when she was 12 years old, ten years after she was forced to flee her home in Rwanda to escape one of mankind’s worst atrocities.

Her father and three of her brothers were among the 800,000 people who were killed in only 100 days during a genocide.

Josiane will visit Ireland for the first time next month to promote Trocaire’s new campaign.

“Generosity is the picture of Ireland in my mind,” she said. “I think it’s a beautiful country.”
