Arrest over woman's disappearance in 2000

Detectives investigating the disappearance of a woman more than 10 years ago have arrested a person who was just 11 at the time.

Sandra Collins vanished in her home village of Killala in Co Mayo on December 4 2000.

A 21-year-old woman has been arrested and is being questioned at Ballina garda station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939.

It is understood her detention could be in relation to withholding evidence in recent years.

Ms Collins was 29 when she vanished. She left her aunt's house, where she lived and who she cared for, went to the local shop and bought some groceries.

She was last seen at about 11.15pm, more than three hours later, at the local takeaway, The Country Kitchen.

Investigating gardai marked the 10th anniversary of her disappearance with a fresh appeal aimed at identifying a white van that was in Killala at the time.

Ms Collins' sister Bridie and brother Patrick, who believe something bad happened to their sister either intentionally or by accident, have appealed for information to help them find the body to let them bury her.

The missing woman is described as 5ft in height with a small slim build, and short brown hair with red highlights

When last seen, she was wearing black trousers, a maroon polo neck jumper, a beige sleeveless jacket with a hood and black boots.
