Army experts blow up old grenade

The Defence Forces identified the device as a Mills Grenade, which could be close to 100 years old

Army bomb experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a grenade dating back to the early 20th century.

The old bomb was discovered today by people digging at a home in Crosshaven, Co Cork.

The Defence Forces identified the device as a Mills Grenade, which could be close to 100 years old.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team arrived at the scene at the private residence.

The area was cordoned off and traffic restrictions were put in place while the grenade was taken to a secure location nearby where it was made safe by means of a controlled explosion.
