Three men aged in their twenties entered the premises in Athboy shortly after 2pm this afternoon, with at least one of the raiders armed with a shotgun.

They threatened a lone female staff member behind the counter.

An as of yet unknown amount of cash was handed over and the three men fled the scene in a car.

However the getaway vehicle crashed a short distance away from the scene, with the men leaving the damaged car behind.

The armed garda Regional Support Unit (RSU) were deployed and one of the men was arrested moments after the crash, while a sum of cash was also recovered.

A garda operation involving members of the RSU hunted the two remaining raiders through a bogland near the town before the two remaining suspects were arrested.

The three males are currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 at Kells and Trim Garda Stations.
