ARMED Gardai arrested a man wearing a balaclava near a Cork post office after locals reported suspicious activity.

The man, in his 30s and from Cork city, was arrested outside Aghada in east Cork shortly after 9am today by uniformed officers supported by armed members of the Regional Support Unit (RSU).

The man was found to be in possession of a balaclava.

A search of the area later resulted in a handgun being recovered.

Officers had raced to the scene after locals notified them about a man acting suspiciously near the local post office.

The man had repeatedly walked away from the post office branch as locals passed by.

The man also seemed determined not to have locals see his face.

Gardai detained the man under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and took him to Midleton Garda Station for questioning.

Ballistics experts will now conduct an examination of the recovered firearm to determine its origin and to see if it had been recently fired.

The man can be detained for up to seven days.
