PLANS to house Dublin's new Lord Mayor at Aras an Uachtarain were at an advanced stage before Fingal County Council scuppered the vote, the Herald has learned.
High-level talks on the move – which had been due to take place today – have now been cancelled. President Higgins would have taken up residence in the nearby Steward's Lodge in Farmleigh.
An official spokesperson said this would have cut down on expensive removal costs to the taxpayer.
It is understood that the newly-installed mayor would have been given the opportunity to close the Phoenix Park for at least three private parties every year.
The re-opening of the Pheonix Park tunnel from Heuston Station to the Aras was also being considered exclusively for the mayor's use.
