The articles referred to Sergeant Fearghal O'Toole of Drogheda Garda Station.

We are happy to clarify that Sergeant O'Toole advises that he was not present at Drogheda Garda Station when the alleged incident occurred. We are happy to clarify that Sergeant O'Toole did not give evidence at the trial and is not the subject of the public interest investigation.

Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Limited apologises to Sergeant O'Toole for the distress caused.
