ANOTHER Government sanctioned Commission of Investigations has been delayed until after the General Election.
Justice Kevin O’Higgins has toady sought an extension for his inquiry into serious allegations of malpractice in the Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division.
The report into allegations from Garda Whistleblower Maurice McCabe was due to report next month but Mr O’Higgins has written to the Department of Justice seeking to extend his deadline until April.
The delay to the O’Higgins Commission follows news last week that the Commission of Investigation into transactions made by IBRC would also not report until after the election.
Mr O’Higgins said his investigation was “hampered” by “delays and inefficient handling” of document which witnesses were obliged to disclose to his inquiry.
“Problems with disclosure of documents contributed greatly to the commission being unable now to meet its original deadline,” he said.
He also cited issues surrounding the Commission’s IT and telecommunications infrastructure for the delay in publishing his report.
