Another blow for Irish beef industry as Co-Op drops Silvercrest order

THE Co-Op Food Group - which has 2,800 stores throughout Britain and Northern Ireland - said tonight it is ditching Silvercrest as a supplier.

This followed tests on frozen burgers supplied by Silvercrest which found one burger containing 17.7pc horsemeat.

The company said in a statement: "We specify that all meat in our frozen burgers should be 100pc British.

"But we now strongly believe that some of the meat used to produce these burgers came from outside the UK and was not British in origin, and as a result we have taken the decision to delist Silvercrest as a supplier with immediate effect".

Independent.ie Comments Facility

INM has taken the decision to remove the commenting facility on its online platform Independent.ie to minimise the legal risk to our business that arises from Ireland's draconian libel awards system.

We continue to look forward to receiving comments through direct email contact or via social media, some of which may still be featured on the website Independent.ie
