TWO anglers caught the first salmon of 2013 on the River Drowse in Co Leitrim.

Both snatches were timed within minutes at 12.20pm yesterday more than 5km apart. One was caught in the Wee Drain pool near the village of Tullaghan and the other in the Black Water pool near Lough Melvin.

Drowse Fishery owner Shane Gallagher said the catches, one a four-pounder and the other a 10-pounder, were being given the same time.

But Colin Gardiner (56), from Glenavon Lane, Lurgan, a retired firefighter, reckoned his catch of the four-pounder was first by some minutes.

Mr Gardiner also caught the first salmon in Ireland on the Drowse in 2002 and 2005.

The 10-pounder was caught by Timmy Dalton, from Orangefield Park, Omagh.
