THE now famous ‘Angela Merkel’ tricolour that made headlines across Europe during Euro 2012 has been sold off at auction for €15,800 with a further 5,000 also raised.

The money raised will go a range of charities.

Pictures of the“Angela Merkel Thinks We’re At Work” banner went viral on the internet and the flag featured in Germany’s biggest selling tabloid Bild as well as websites across the globe.

It was the brainchild of six University of Limerick graduates who uploaded the original picture and auctioned the flag on RTE radio today.

It was bought buy Antrim-based firm Glendun Group and Iris R&D, who submitted a bid together.

Dublin nightclub Copper Face Jacks donated a further €5,000 but lost out in a bid for the flag.

A number of charities will share the money raised including the Children's Medical and Research Foundation in Dublin and the Oscar Appeal, which was established to provide treatment for Oscar Knox, a three-year-old Belfast boy with neuroblastoma, a form of nerve tissue cancer.
