American Football is on the way to Lansdowne
THINGS have certainly changed at Lansdowne Road, but this just doesn't seem sporting.
Anyone glancing through the glass wall of the stadium yesterday may have done a double take at the sight of American Football posts emerging from the pitch.
But no, it's not a new era of sport at the famous rugby ground -- it's a trial run for one of the biggest US sporting fixtures on the calendar.
And it will be here next September. When Navy lace up to take on Notre Dame at the Aviva, thousands of fans will be invited to partake in a little sporting history.
Already some 10,000 people in America have made plans to travel to the capital for the fixture, including 1,000 Naval midshipmen.
Tickets are due to go on sale here in March, with details yet to be announced.
The fixture -- which was held in Croke Park in 1996 -- will prove a massive boost to Irish tourism and the local economy.
