Almost 500,000 watched event

ALMOST half a million people watched Queen Elizabeth plant an oak tree at Aras an Uachtarain just a hour after she landed in Ireland.

RTE said yesterday that 60pc of the television audience watched the arrival of the queen and Prince Phillip at Baldonnel aerodrome live on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands more tuning in during the day.

Some 700,000 people tuned into the 'RTE News' on Tuesday night.

The station will today cover the queen's visit to the National Stud in Kildare, followed by the event at the National Convention Centre hosted by the British Embassy.

TV3 will also carry extensive coverage.
