Alarm protest in dole office

A 33-year-old man was arrested after setting off several fire alarms in a dole office yesterday in protest at being homeless.

The man entered Galway's main social welfare office on Augustine Street yesterday morning and started activating fire alarms.

Around 20 staff and social welfare recipients were in the building, which was immediately cleared . The social welfare office re-opened shortly afterwards.

The man was arrested and taken to Mill Street garda station but later released.
