Airport given lifeline
A RURAL airport fighting for its survival has been given a reprieve after two local councils voted to provide €100,000 in funding. Galway Airport was at risk of closing within months.
Now both the city and county councils have pledged €50,000 each to the facility. It must provide a viable business plan by February 11 to secure the funds.
Cost of diabetic mums
THE cost of maternity care for women with gestational diabetes is 34pc higher than the average, a study has found.
Gestational diabetes mellitus is diagnosed during pregnancy and it develops in about 12pc of pregnancies, affecting more women who are overweight. Previous research has shown that it carries with it increased risks for both mother and baby.
Rival for 'Love/Hate'
TV3 is celebrating strong ratings for its first home-produced drama 'Deception', which attracted an average audience of 311,000 to its opening episode on Monday night. That was enough for bosses to commission a second season already.
And at €200,000 an episode, compared to €600,000 per episode for RTE's 'Love/Hate', 'Deception' producer Hugh Farley said he felt his drama compared favourably with its rival.
No sneezing matter
The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) has urged people to think about the risk to fellow passengers when they cough or sneeze on a plane.
The CFAI says the airlines should issue reminders whether they have people with CF on board or not, as everyone would benefit from good practice.
Colin Farrell honour
Actor Colin Farrell will be honoured at a pre-Oscars film bash in the US next month.
The Dublin actor will be recognised at the elaborately-titled 'Oscar Wilde: Honouring the Irish in Film' in Santa Monica, California on February 21.
