AIB chief warns staff

THE head of AIB has vowed to fire any managers who use loans from their own institution to become property developers or investors.

AIB chief executive David Duffy said that while he does not have the exact details of how many of the bank's staff used loans during the Celtic Tiger to dabble in the property market, he accepts that the practice prevailed.

But he said the days of the banker becoming the investor are now over at AIB and he promised to root out and dismiss any manager or other member of staff who uses their position to borrow the bank's money for their own gain.

Global diaspora forum

WE'RE famous for our worldwide scattering of ex-pats and descendants and now Ireland is to host the European "strand" of a global diaspora forum.

The decision to bring the Global Diaspora Forum to Ireland was taken by Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore following an approach by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during a visit here last December.

Inspired by Mrs Clinton, the forum has been held in Washington since 2011 but its first European leg will now be staged in Dun Laoghaire on May 14 and 15.
