The 2013 National Ploughing Championships are to be held in Laois, it has been announced. The three-day event takes place outside the picturesque village of Stradbally from September 24 to 26 and is expected to attract 190,000 visitors.
The ploughing event takes just three weeks after Stradbally hosts the Electric Picnic music festival.
The championships will provide a windfall for the area, given that the 2011 championships were worth over €36m to host town Athy.
The host farmer for the event is David Carter, who farms at Ratheniska, outside Stradbally. The Carter family and neighbouring landowners will provide 700 acres for the ploughing ground, commercial stands and parking.
