A HUMAN rights activist from Afghanistan has won the Tipperary International Peace Award.
Dr Sima Samar is chair of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and a former United Nations special rapporteur. The organisers of the Tipperary peace award said Dr Samar was selected as she "has risked her life to fight for the rights of women and girls in both Afghanistan and Pakistan".
She will receive the 2010 Tipperary International Peace Award at a special ceremony later this year.
Previous recipients of the award include former South African President Nelson Mandela and Bob Geldof.
