A troop of 11 pregnant women gathered to highlight Trocaire's gift of "safe motherhood" for women in southwest Somalia, where one in eleven women die during pregnancy and childbirth.

Aisling, who is due in December, dressed in pink to stand up for women who do not live to see their newborn.

Trocaire has reported a 50pc fall in Christmas gift sales over the past three years.

"However, despite the crisis here, people's sense of empathy is remarkable and we hope they will continue to support us this year," said Trocaire's Meabh Smith.

Trocaire's Global Gifts can be bought online or by calling 1850 408 408 and in Trocaire centres nationwide.
