Volunteers have tackled 125 gardens in Dublin, Cork and Galway as part of an initiative to help elderly neighbours.

Age Action and Bank of Ireland took part in the 'backyard blitz', which saw bank workers giving a 'dig out' to local older people who need a bit of help.

During the two-day initiative yesterday and today, teams swarmed over 125 gardens cutting 11,990sqm of grass and pulling 2,003sqm of weeds.

Ambassador Alan Brogan said: "There was great work done to help older people in the community, who may not be able to manage the upkeep themselves."
