ARTIST and former Miss Ireland Nuala Holloway's oil painting Famine Ship: Jeanie Johnston was accepted by the American Embassy to be presented to Barack Obama during his Irish visit last week.
"I offered it as a gift to the embassy. They said they were only selecting certain gifts to give to the president," Nuala told the Sunday Independent. "So I forgot about it, until one evening I got a phone call saying that they loved it."
The painting depicts an 1850s famine ship of the kind that would have brought Mr Obama's Irish ancestor Falmouth Kearney to the New World, where he married Charlotte Holloway. Nuala is currently researching family connections to Mr Obama.
