A native's guide to Galway Races: 'I'll have to put cotton wool in my ears to forget the party is going on'
MANHANDLING famous footballers to do interviews, sampling the champagne tent, and sussing out the towering heels brigade is all in a day's work for RTE's queen of the style squad.
Aran Islands native Maura Derrane will be helping to present RTE's coverage from Ballybrit and she claims the heady atmosphere at the Galway Races, as the glitz and glamour descends for Thursday's Ladies' Day, must be experienced to be believed.
In her early days at the races and when she started working at Irish language station TG4, Maura would often test her dancing skills into the wee hours in the bustling haunts along Quay Street. Not this year though. In order not be bleary-eyed on TV, Maura says "I'll have to go home and put cotton wool in my ears and forget the party is going on."
Yet, she might just be spotted having an after-races cocktail in the fashionable G Hotel and, to continue the 'Sex and the City' vibe, enjoying the after-dinner fashion in the Radisson Hotel or kicking off the heels in O'Connor's in Salthill.
